overall, very nice basin

A great backpacking trip, bag the 14ers and a few 13ers while you are there, but beware of the goats.

Nice and remote. Fun train ride into Needleton. Enjoyable hike into the basin. The wildflowers are in full bloom. Tons of peaks to climb in the area.

Chicago Basin is about as close to an Alpine Valley (Swiss Alps) as one can get in the USA - and more isolated / better preserved. Accessed only by backpacking trail (shortened if you ride the Durango-Silverton Steam Train into the Animas River Canyon), you are surrounded by 13'er peaks of the most rugged contour. The Chicago Basin is at the upper end of the 8-mile trail along Needle Creek, from which backpackers often make a loop hike into either Elk Creek or Vallecito Creek.

If you really want to get away, this is the place!
